When a business website is not performing — slow, dated, hard to update, or generating too little enquiry — the instinct is to "get a new website." But a full rebuild is not always necessary, and a surface redesign is not always sufficient. Choosing the right approach saves significant time and money.
The Difference: Redesign vs Rebuild
| Redesign | Partial Rebuild | Full Rebuild | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What changes | Visual design only — new theme, new colours, new layout | Design + some structural changes — new templates, new plugins, improved architecture | Everything — new platform, new code, new structure |
| Existing content | Stays in place | Migrated and reorganised | Fully rewritten or migrated |
| Time | 1-3 weeks | 4-8 weeks | 8-20 weeks |
| Cost (Sri Lanka agency) | £400-900 | £900-2,500 | £2,000-8,000+ |
| Risk | Low | Medium | Higher — more to go wrong |
When a Redesign Is Enough
- The site structure and navigation are logical — it just looks dated
- All the content is accurate and organised well
- The site loads at a reasonable speed
- All functionality works correctly (forms, e-commerce, logins)
- The platform (WordPress, etc.) is current and maintained
In this case, a new theme and some design polish will give you a fresh look without the risk and cost of starting over.
When You Need a Partial Rebuild
- The structure is confusing — pages in the wrong places, unclear navigation, poor URL structure
- You need new functionality that cannot be added to the current setup easily
- The current theme is a bloated page builder (Divi, Avada) you want to replace with something lighter
- The site has accumulated years of plugin conflicts and technical debt that makes changes risky
When You Need a Full Rebuild
- The current site is on an outdated platform (old Joomla, Drupal 6, custom PHP with no CMS)
- You are changing your business model significantly — e.g. adding e-commerce to a brochure site
- The codebase has been heavily customised in ways that make updates dangerous
- The site has been compromised and cleaned multiple times — sometimes a fresh start is cleaner than continued remediation
- You need to replatform — e.g. moving from a custom system to WordPress for easier content management
The SEO Consideration
A full rebuild carries SEO risk if not managed carefully. All your existing URLs, page titles, and meta descriptions need to be mapped and redirected properly. Done badly, a rebuild can lose years of accumulated search ranking. Always insist your developer provides a redirect map and implements 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones.
